Jesse Marsh, who was mentioned as a strong candidate to lead the Korean national soccer team but ended up taking the
reins of Canada, experienced a bitter taste even before his debut.
The Canadian national soccer team, led by coach Marsh, was completely defeated 0-4 by the Netherlands in an evaluation
match held at Stadion Feyenoord in Rotterdam, Netherlands on the 6th (local time).
Canada, who gave up the first goal to Memphis Depay (Atletico Madrid) in the 5th minute of the second half, collapsed
after conceding goals to Jeremy Frimpong (Leverkusen) 7 minutes later and Wout Wechhorst (Hoffenheim) 13 minutes
later.
In the 38th minute of the second half, Virgil van Dijk, a key center back for the Netherlands and England powerhouse
Liverpool, scored a goal to seal the victory.
The Netherlands is a world powerhouse, ranked 7th in the FIFA rankings. Canada is ranked 49th.
It was a match where the Netherlands was expected to dominate, and Canada actually lost big. Aside from the score of 0-4,
there was no indicator that showed a lack of inferiority, including the number of shots (6-20), the number of effective
shots (2-11), and the ball possession (39%-61%).
The game marked Marsh's debut for Team Canada.
Coach Marsh predicted in a press conference the day before that it would be a difficult game, but said, "We will be
organized in all aspects. We will continue to make the opponent uncomfortable when they have the ball and force them to
make mistakes," but the game did not go as 추천 planned.
"Our ultimate vision and goal is where we are two years from now (when the World Cup in North and Central America
takes place)," Marsh said after the game, according to the Canadian Press.
He added, "It may not be entirely fair (from my perspective) to play the Netherlands in the first game and France in the
second game, but what can we do? We need to grow as a team, and there is no better way to do that than by playing against
these opponents."
Canada will play its second evaluation match against France on the 9th.
Coach Marsh was mentioned as a strong candidate to lead Korean soccer until early to mid last month.
It has been reported that the Korea Football Association's National Team Strengthening Committee Chairman Jeong Hae-
seong met in person in London, England in April and discussed detailed contracts, including annual salaries.
Coach Marsh has been recognized for his leadership by leading Austrian side Salzburg to two league titles between 2019
and 2021.
He also has a connection with Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton), a key striker for the Korean national team, who played
for Salzburg.
Chairman Jeong Hae-seong met with Director Marsh in London, England last month and even had a meeting, but the
negotiations ultimately broke down.
It is reported that there was a large difference of opinion between the two sides regarding detailed conditions including
annual salary.
The annual salary of the next national team coach being considered by the Football Association is reportedly in the range
of $1.5 million to $2 million (about 2.05 billion to 2.73 billion won) excluding tax. Manager Marsh received an annual
salary of 3.5 million pounds (about 6 billion won) from his previous manager, Leeds United (England).
The Canadian Soccer Association, which is in a difficult financial situation, succeeded in bringing in Marsh by drawing
support from the owners of three Canadian teams (Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver) that participate in the United
States' Major League Soccer (MLS)
